Project Highlights and Achievements

Developed "Gold Standard" reporting technique that provided easy-to-use reporting interface to complex SAP Business Warehouse for Goddard Space Flight Center (GSFC).

I was challenged to provide consistent, easy-to-use financial reports to our user community. NASA had just implemented a new financial system that replaced multiple legacy systems with a complex reporting interface as delivered by SAP's Business Information Warehouse. Utilizing URL parameter substitution as well as creating a simplified HTML front-end, I was able to deliver ease-of-use and provide financial clarity via pre-formatted reports to a user community that was struggling greatly with a new financial system.

Result: "Gold Standard" reports are the de-facto standard reports for GSFC. Moreover, this technique was shared with the entire NASA reporting community and is now being utilized by a majority of all NASA's centers.

Designed and implemented Brio/Oracle financial reporting solution for GSFC Resources community.

GSFC had been using a legacy reporting system for many years producing standard reports that were executed from a RAMIS command shell with little or no ad-hoc capability. The challenge was to extract the legacy data using JCL, design, create, and ultimately populate an Oracle data warehouse using SQL*Loader. Post database deployment, I designed and delivered required report formats and provided access to the data using Brio Intelligence client/server software utilizing Oracle middleware and internet protocols. Post implementation, I provided training to well over two hundred users, quickly bringing the Resources community up to speed.

Result: Brio quickly became the reporting tool of choice for financial reports. Due to the success of this deployment, many other organizations took advantage of the Brio client/server capability and solicited development efforts from our organization. Received Federal Executive Board (FEB) Outstanding Administrative Work Group/Team Silver Award and the FEB Gold Award in May of 2009.

Designed and implemented Monthly Status Reporting (MSR) Tool reporting solution for GSFC Resources community.

GSFC Resource Analysts are confronted with a non-intuitive standard reporting solution, which is not conducive for effective analysis in all cases. The MSR Tool bridges the gap by automating the extraction of Project data from the standard reporting solution into meaningful, user-defined reporting categories, which can be used to generate meaningful plan vs. actual reports as well as phasing plans.

Result: For many Resource Analysts, the MSR Tool has greatly reduced the burden of providing meaningful monthly analysis to management by reducing the time required to gather data, which allows the resource analyst more time to provide meaningful analytical insights.

Developed and maintained various relational databases for use within GSFC’s Financial Management Division. Developed and maintained various RAMIS procedures for the Financial Management Division.

The Financial Management Division was laboring with a manual process to provide Letters of Credit (LOC) to various Universities and other organizations. I developed the LOC MS-Access database that automated the production of these letters on a monthly basis utilizing sophisticated form designs and Visual Basic for Applications to mask database complexity from the users. The solution automatically imported financial data and provided a status of current activity to the FMD analyst as well as to the providing University.

Result: The LOC database provided significant timesavings, thereby freeing the FMD analysts of tedious, mistake prone work. Additionally, presentation quality letters were automatically generated by the database for distribution to customers.

Developed and maintained POES Reconciliation Database, replacing a complex series of manually created and maintained spreadsheets.

GSFC’s POES project needed to prepare an annual plan and prepare various report formats. The original system relied on a complex series of spreadsheets that were manually linked together using a base minimum logic. The challenge was to convert this system in to a database-driven solution that could easily produce the required report formats. I automated the loading of actual data and provided a GUI for the entering of plan data. Moreover, the required report formats were built into the database and could be executed at any time.

Result: The POES reconciliation database allowed the resources analysts more time to do actual analysis, rather than worry about how to link various spreadsheets together.
